1) What factors are important when thinking about buying a pool?

Ask yourself some important questions:

• How is the pool going to be used?
• Mainly for fitness and laps?
• Playing water sports?
• Part of a backyard wildlife sanctuary?

Pools are as much about creating an atmosphere as recreation.

2) What types of pools do you sell?

We sell 3 general types:

• One piece composites for fast installation & easy maintenance - available in six beautiful Trilogy one-piece colors
• Vinyl-lined pools that can be made into different shapes
• Acrylic wall with concrete floor pool. Combines easy cleaning characteristics of a vinyl lined pool with the design flexibility of concrete.

3) Should homeowners obtain their own building permits?

No. The homeowner takes on all liability for the project if he obtains his own permit. In essence, the homeowner becomes the general contractor. Require your licensed contractor to obtain the building permit.

4) What should I look for in a pool contractor?

Ask them key questions, such as:

• How long have they been in business?
• What types of pools have they built?
• Are they licensed to build pools in Tennessee?
• Can they give you references of satisfied customers, and visit actual pools?
• Are they members of the National Pool & Spa Trade Association?

5) Are there standards for pool contractors?

Yes, the Association of Pool & Spa Professionals has set up standards for pool contractors to follow. Ask your contractor if he is an APSP member. Also check with the Better Business Bureau about a contractor's history.

6) When is the best time to build a pool in middle Tennessee?

The drier months of August, September, October, and November are the best time to build a pool here. While a pool can be built year-round, damage to the rest of the yard is minimized during construction, and landscaping can be given a head start for the next spring.

7) How long does it take to build a pool?

Generally 6-8 weeks. One piece composites of Granicote can be installed more quickly. Some special water features may take a little longer to complete. Bad weather may also delay installation.

8) What are the safety issues I need to be concerned with when building my swimming pool?

All pools must be constructed to ANSI/NSPI-5 2003 standards as adopted by the International Residential code.

9) What are some general guidelines when building a pool?

• Your pool builder must be licensed by the State of Tennessee to build pools
• Must be licensed by your city and county to conduct business
• Preferably a member of the Better Business Bureau
• Preferably a member of The Association of Pool & Spa Professionals
• Must have General Liability and Workmen's Compensation Insurance
• Must have the above licenses and insurance to buy a building permit
• Never buy your own permits. It makes you liable for the project and any injuries or damages that might occur.
• Ask to look at pools your builder has completed. Talk to his clients.
• Check with The Better Business Bureau for any unresolved complaints.
• How many subcontractors will your builder use? The fewer the better
• Will the company continue if the current owners are not there?
